Assessment

Letter recognition

Reading (Alien Words)

Tricky/Heart Words

Tricky/Heart Words

Assessment instructions

In order to test phonemic rather than whole-word knowledge, assessments 1-78 use alien words that students will not have seen before. Explain to the student before you start, that the words have been taken from an alien's shopping list.

Once the assessment is started children must tap the screen or click the mouse to move on to the next sound or word.

Parents: The assessments can also be used as a quick assessment tool (without recording the results) to find out which lessons to start your child at. Simply start at the first assessment and keep going until your child gets an incorrect answer.

Record sheet instructions:

  • Before beginning, enter all the children's names on the  overview sheet. This will auto-fill their names on all the assessments.
  • As the pupil reads out the letter/sounds or words on the assessment sheet, record the correct answer by typing a 1, or an incorrect answer by typing a 2.
  • Use the tab button to move to the next cell.
  • A percentage total is automatically calculated and added to the overview page.
  • Use the sort function to identify the lowest 20% and provide these children with keep-up support.

Visualise Data

Graphs are a great way to see your students' results. The above chart is included on the 'Graph Example' sheet and you can easily create your own by selecting the data and going to > Insert > Chart

Keep-up lessons

Children who need additional practise should receive daily keep-up support. Keep-up lessons should mirror the structure of class teaching but in smaller steps and with more repetition so that every child secures their learning. Routines and resources used in the keep-up lessons should match the whole class core phonics sessions.  Consistency of approach is vital when supporting vulnerable pupils and those at risk of falling behind.

Keep-up lessons should be sharply focused on key learning identified through ongoing assessment. Lessons should be taught daily in addition to the whole class session and last around 5 minutes.
