First refers to explicit, structured teaching. Learners benefit when new learning is introduced clearly and directly, rather than being left to infer patterns. Teaching sounds, spellings, and language rules first reduces cognitive overload and removes guesswork. This clarity is crucial for learners who may struggle to automatically detect patterns in print.
Fast does not mean rushed; it means brisk, focused, and frequent. Short, high-impact lessons with rapid review help strengthen neural pathways for reading and spelling. Dyslexic students often need many more repetitions than their peers, and a fast-paced cycle of review → teach → practise → apply supports long-term retention without boredom.
A first and fast approach also supports:
When combined with multi-sensory strategies (hear it, see it, say it, write it), cumulative progression, and regular assessment, a first and fast approach creates a predictable, safe learning environment. This structure is especially empowering for dyslexic learners, who thrive when teaching is systematic, explicit, and responsive to their learning needs.Develop core reading and spelling skills in a fun and effective way. Lessons introduce the letters and Sounds systematically, along with expert teaching guidance. Lessons are based on an I do, we do, you do methodology, and include animated letter formation. Lessons 1-14 are available below.

The perfect way to apply new knowledge of the letters and sounds. Each letter/sound has its own lesson and each lesson has its own fully decodable book. All books have lists of heart/tricky words, comprehension questions, a sentence for dictation and matching worksheet.

Our Phonics Code progression is aligned to the Ready to Read Phonics Plus scope and sequence (NZ) and the Australian English Curriculum phonic and word knowledge strand: Foundation to Year 5. Lessons can be taught at a rate of 3 per week, with 1-2 days used for revision. Lesson numbers are shown above the picture mnemonics below.
Phonics Code is a structured literacy programme that fosters children’s phonemic awareness skills in preparation for high-quality phonic teaching. They learn how the alphabet works, arming them with the knowledge and skills they need to become fluent readers and confident spellers.
3-part multi-sensory approach, engages students visually, auditorily, and kinesthetically by using visual cues, auditory drills, and kinesthetic activities to reinforce the letters and sounds.
Phonics Code can also be used as a powerful catch-up programme for those with dyslexia, dysgraphia or ‘phonics gaps’. An emphasis on letter formation revision in early lessons and alternative spellings in later sessions provide the necessary repetition and scaffolding for these students.
Lessons 1-18 and the matching decodable books and worksheets are free to use, so you can try out the programme before committing to a subscription.
One-to-one summative assessments of the letter/sounds, reading and spelling can be carried out every 10 weeks.

Teacher guidance and professional learning is embedded within the phonic progression, along with decodable texts, multi-sensory learning tools, and progress monitoring through cumulative digital assessments. All your preparation is taken care of. Phonics is taught directly and in a specific, logical order, starting with basic letter-sound relationships and progressing to more complex patterns. Beyond phonics, the carefully designed daily lessons explicitly teaches:
Phonics Code provides all the necessary resources for children to build a complete understanding of language, not just how to sound out words. While especially effective for struggling readers and those with dyslexia, this comprehensive approach benefits all students by building a robust foundation for reading and writing.
